JBL S312 II 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker with 12" Woofer (Black Maple) Review

Many people, unfortunately, make the mistake -- often encouraged by a sales person -- of spending more money for electronic components than for speakers. But the most important components for determining the sound of an audio system are the speakers. And in the world of superb-sounding speakers JBL currently is the king. The S312 II is a great speaker with clean, sweet highs, natural-sounding midrange and clean, deep bass. There is no speaker at this price which sounds as good. If you feel that you must have a lower price, I recommend the JBL S310 II which drops the woofer size from 12" to 10" But either way, if you want great sound, get JBL speakers -- preferable the S series.

JBL's Studio Series S312 II is a three-way, full-range floorstanding loudspeaker capable of delivering clear, dynamic sound for both music and movies. It's sold as a single speaker. Buy two for stereo uses or pick up five or merely three for use in surround-sound applications--only three if you'll be using two other speakers to serve as the left/right front or surrounds. If your TV is on a high shelf or mounted on the wall, as would a flat-panel set, you can simply position the "center channel" speaker beneath it.Be aware that you don't need a television to enjoy multichannel surround sound: the SACD, DVD-Audio, and DTS-CD formats all make ample use of full-range center-channel speakers, providing you have the space and the inclination to set up speakers for 5- or 5.1-channel music listening. Use a powered subwoofer for the .1 low-frequency effects channel, or configure your surround receiver to fold the .1 signal into the audio feeding the other speakers--with the S312 II's 35 Hz bass rating, you'll have plenty of bass even without a subwoofer. The speaker's Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) waveguide imbues sound with unparalleled spaciousness and definition. The pure-titanium tweeter and the midrange transducer are mounted on a Linear Field Proximity (LFP) bezel that ensures a seamless transition between the middle and high frequencies. The PolyPlas (polymer-coated cellulose fiber) cone woofer features traditional JBL engineering--the same technologies used in JBL's Professional equipment, which is found in stadiums, music halls, and movie theaters around the world.Shielded components allow speaker placement near video monitors. A high-temperature-capable, oversize Kapton voice coil and a HeatScape motor structure allow this speaker to play all types of movies and music with ease, no matter how dynamic the content. The unit's woofers are built on cast-aluminum frames, which reduce distortion and increase its power-handling ability. A low-diffraction IsoPower baffle directs the sound power into the room, reducing distortion from cabinet vibration. The speaker's lock-mitred, computer-designed enclosure requires no internal bracing. Its flared, FreeFlow port increases bass response without adding unwanted port noise (sometimes heard as "chuffing" when you really crank your tunes). JBL's custom-designed drivers allow the use of simple, Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) crossover networks with high-quality electrical components that minimize processing that could degrade the signal. Finally, JBL has outfitted the S312 II with all-metal, gold-plated, five-way binding-post speaker terminals for secure and flexible hookups, from bare wire to banana-plug jacks. What's in the Box One speaker, a speaker grille, and a user's manual.

Sony SSF-5000 Floor Standing 3-way Speaker (Pair) Review

Sony SSF-5000 Floor Standing 3-way Speaker (Pair)

Forget all other audio companies. Sony will always have the highest quality products for the best prices. 3 foot high towers for $50 each??? They must be pretty mediocre right? Wrong. These speakers are wonderful.
They have a full, bright sound and can get as loud as you possibly want (and louder) if you have a decent receiver. There is a great distinction between the tweeter, mid and sub. These are the best speakers I have ever owned.
The only thing wrong with them is if you love extreme, rumbling bass, they might not meet your standards. But a good active sub woofer is a must for any good sound system anyway.

Yamaha NS-6490 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers, Black Finish ( Pair ) Review

Yamaha NS-6490 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers, Black Finish ( Pair )

Made purchase of these NS-6490's on clearance from the 'shack in fall 2009 and I'm glad I did. Probably not worth current retail prices but grab them on markdown if you can. The exterior is beautiful even with the glaring white woofers. The speaker has the required heft to dampen the 8" woofer, and the range should be smooth with the choice of provided driver sizes. Unfortunately we consumers just won't know what it is capable of until it gets a decent crossover. Inside you will find no acoustic fill, which by itself isn't unexpected in a design at this pricepoint. However, there is no effective crossover. there are instead 2 capacitors acting as bass blockers for the 4" mid and the tweeter glued to the back of the terminal cup and the 8" woofer runs full range. In a larger woofer this may not be a problem as the voice coil simply wouldn't drive higher frequencies; here it is. Budget for acoustic fill and a proper crossover, or run a new terminal cup and bi-amp with eq's. I didn't take the other reviews seriously about the lack of bass, chocking it up to the sealed design. Stock levels are woeful for the woofer and box size. I'm hoping some acoustic fill will round out the bottom end a little until I can get a decent set of crossovers.

Yamaha NS-777 3-Way Bass Reflex Tower Speaker Review

Yamaha NS-777 3-Way Bass Reflex Tower Speaker
Average Reviews:

I'm no audiophile, but I know good speakers when I hear them. These play all ranges of music and movies very well. There is not as much low-end bass as I would expect from 2 8" drivers unless I add it from the receiver (Sony STR-DA1000ES). My receiver only pushes 100 watts/channel, which I was worried would not be enough... I was wrong. Eric Clapton and the Eagles never sounded so good! If you're looking for high quality sound with tight bass notes and crisp highs, these are your speakers. If you're looking for a booming sound for Rap or Action movies, I would suggest complementing these with a subwoofer.
Lastly, the "piano" black finish on the outside of these speakers is spectacular. Everyone thinks they are way more expensive than they are because of the finish and size. Just be careful when taking them out of the box so as not scratch the finish.

Yamaha NS777 250Watt 3-Way Tower SpeakerEnhance your home with the NS-777 High Performance Home Theater Floor Standing Speakers. Yamaha's NS-777 speaker system has been designed specifically for home theater applications. The floor standing speaker is a bass-reflex design that can be used for main channels and incorporates a pair of 8" Polymer-Injected Mica Diaphragm (PMD) cone woofers, a 5" midrange cone driver and a 1” aluminum dome tweeter. For improved imaging, the midrange and tweeter utilize Yamaha's exclusive waveguide horns. Unlike most homes, movie theaters use sound absorbing materials on walls and ceilings. The result is that the sound reaching your ears is the sound wave produced by the speakers rather than reflected off the walls. Yamaha has created wave guides that greatly reduce reflected sound and increase the proportion of directly generated sound waves reaching your ears. The result is a clear and precise sense of sound direction and placement.

Yamaha NS-555 3-Way Bass Reflex Tower Speaker (Each) Review

I bought these speakers only after I made the mistake and purchased the NS-125s. After being very disappointed with those speakers, I was looking for anything to cheer me up. Then when my package of NS-555's came, and I set them up...wow!! I am using them as my main speakers, along with my Yamaha receiver, center, rear and powered sub. I wanted to go wtih Yamaha speakers as my main to complete my setup.
All I can say, after I figured my receiver for the better main speakers, I was litterly blown away. These speakers rock and now my TV room sounds like a movie theater. I was worried that my receiver wouldn't have enough power for these speakers. I am running 75 watts per channel in theater mode and 100 watts in stereo mode. Even with the 75 watts, I can not even turn my system above -30 before the sounds starts to rock the entire house!!! This was the sound that I was looking for when I first had my idea of a home theater system.
Overall I highly recommend these speakers. I could not beleive the power difference between the NS-125s, and for only $50 more per speaker, the choice is all ready made easy! These speakers sound great. I can hear sounds in movies that I never heard before, seeing I was using a 2 way speaker and upgraded to a 3 way. All I need now is to upgrade my center to a 3 way and I am done!

Yamaha's NS-555 speaker system has been designed specifically for home theater applications. The floor standing speaker is a bass-reflex design that can be used for main channels and incorporates a pair of 6 1/4-inch Polymer-Injected Mica Diaphragm (PMD) cone woofers, a 5-inch midrange cone driver and a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter. Yamaha has chosen to ensure optimum sound quality by internally wiring some of the components with Monster Cable. This ensures a clean, clear signal from the crossover network to the speaker driver. Yamaha's matching speaker stands provides the solid footing necessary for full floor contact, enhanced stability, and minimal vibration resonance. The stands also provide an attractive counterpoint to the cabinet. The speaker is magnetically shielded, so it can be placed on a TV or video monitor without degrading the picture via stray magnetic fields. To further maintain signal purity, Yamaha provides bi-wiring capability for the NS-555 speakers. There are separate +/- terminals for the woofer and other drivers. The separation reduces modulation distortion and better sound quality. The EF series speakers are enclosed in an Elliptical Form cabinet with a high gloss black piano finish, which provides solid construction with minimal sound diffraction. New grill design and grill cloth provide an attractive and acoustically transparent protective cover for the drivers.

Cerwin Vega VE-15 15" 3-Way Tower Speaker (1) Review

I was surprised at how big and heavy these speakers were when the arrived to my home. But I soon forgot all of that when I hooked them up and listened to the great sound!!!
I originally purchased these speakers to replace a pair of old Mitsubishi speakers from the mid 80's my parents had abandoned and I had found a use for. I didn't really understand why these speakers where pricey but I decided to get them because there are no more REAL floor standing speakers in the market anymore!! I'm glad I made the decision to purchase these. They deliver way better bass compared to the old Mitsu's I had. And the tweeters produce a very rich, but not over the top sound. The woofer and the tweeters are perfectly synchronized to deliver a good balance of low and high sounds.
All in all, if you're out looking around for a real pair of floor speakers, end your search now and purchase these, you won't regret it.
