Samsung HP-S5053 50-Inch Plasma HDTV Review

Samsung HP-S5053 50-Inch Plasma HDTV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After shopping for several months I finally took the plunge and purchased this TV from a national chain. I finally decided plasma over DLP because of the vertical fading effect I saw with all the DLP sets. I took two of my own DVDs in to the store with me and made the staff there hook up a player so I could see both the fast action of The Matrix and the beautiful scenery of Spring, Summmer, Fall, Winter, Spring. The picture on the Samsung HP-S5053 was the second best of the many plasmas that I examined. The Pioneer had a better picture but was significantly more expensive. I do not use the built in speakers because I had an existing 5.1 speaker system. I really like the minimal black casing since the silver finishes are distracting-at least to my eye.
The menus are extremely intuitive. I didn't have to read the instructions at all to get anything working within an hour of unpacking my system. I purchased an upconverting DVD player and an HDMI cable at the same time I purchased this TV. My old DVDs look great on this TV. The 10-15 HD channels I get with Cox cable also look incredible. The one fault I've found is that if I use the HDMI cable from my cable box or DVD player and connect to the TV and then connect the digital audio out of the TV to my receiver I only receive stereo sound even when the original broadcast is 5.1. I get around this by using composite video cables from the cable box and DVD player to the HPS5053 and also run a digital audio line from each source to the receiver. The HPS5053 has plenty of inputs to support almost any type of user.

Offering an incredible feature set and exceptional quality for its price, Samsung's fifth-generation 50-inch HP-S5053 plasma TV uses the company's proprietary electronic chassis and the latest DNIe enhancement circuitry to deliver outstanding brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Use it for home theater and use it for your PC--it's perfect for both. In addition to a standard-broadcast NTSC tuner, it also features an integrated ATSC tuner that can capture over-the-air digital broadcasts from local network affiliates (the set will still require a set-top tuner for receiving non-terrestrial HD broadcasts from channels like HBO or Discovery).
The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. Thanks to the new 13-bit processing capability of DNIe, the HP-S5053 can produce over 549 billion colors (compared to the one billion colors that TVs with 10-bit processing can produce.
This set features a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, 175-degree viewing angle, brightness rating of 1300 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), and an amazing 10000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.
The anti-glare plasma panel offers several protective features to resist burn-in, including auto pixel shift, signal pattern processing, and white screen function. It's rated for a 60,000-hour panel life (6 hours of usage a day for 27 years). Other features include:
Picture-in-picture (PIP) enables convenient simultaneous viewing of TV programs and video or PC sources.
Parental Control (V-Chip) helps parents monitor what their children watch on TV by establishing rating limits.
Auto volume leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.
Multi-lingual on-screen displays in English, Spanish or French.
Side A/V input

High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the sides of the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. It produces 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts total) and offers the following connection options:
Composite (RCA audio/video): 2 inputs (1 on the side)
S-Video: 2 inputs (1 on the side)
Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 2 inputs
HDMI: 2 inputs
PC: 1 D-Sub15 input
RF: 2 inputs
Digital audio: 1 coaxial and 1 optical

Tech Talk HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

I just got this TV set up in my home last evening and I couldn't be more pleased with it. For an "entry level" LCD HDTV, it displays an excellent picture- even on the standard cable channels! The High-def channels are absolutely beautiful. Overall the picture is very crisp and bright (VERY bright at the factory back light setting of 10; had to turn it down a few notches) and the colors are perfect as far as I'm concerned. While I'm sure extreme videophiles will disagree, I can't find any faults with this TV and would recommend it to anyone who's in the market for a flat-panel HDTV in this size and/or price range.

For anyone looking for a great value on a 720p HDTV, Samsung's 2007 model LNT4042H 40-inch flat-panel LCD is an excellent choice. As Samsung's entry level 40-inch LCD, it offers a 7000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, a 170-degree viewing angle, an 8ms response time panel, 3 HDMI inputs, and SRS TruSurroundXT from two side speakers. Between the design update, the aditional connections, and improved contrast ratio this model represents a distinct improvement on the popular comperable 40-inch Samsung from 2006 (LNS4041D).

I bought this TV through Amazon from JR Music Co.for $449.00 just before Christmas. They said in their e-mail response to my order that although the TV was new and factory fresh they would open it and add extra packing. I wondered since it had already made it from Mexico to NYC why extra packing was necessary.
I found no extra packing when I opened the box and when I turned on the TV the blank screen had an arc of light about an inch wide from the edge of the screen to just past the middle. My suspicions were heightened.
But after finally adjusting the picture I am more than pleased. I am a subscriber to Directv. I've never seen such vivid colors even on stations that are not High Def. The screen looks like an expensive glossy photograph. I am mesmerized by the colors and the sound is so good I watched an hour and half performance by the Vienna Philharmonic Ochestra on PBS last night without having to turn on my stereo.
The day I ordered this tv from Amazon for $449.00 and no shipping charges I checked Costco and their price was $749.00 plus $25.00 shipping. I am very happy with my Sony 26N4000 television.

This is my first LCD tv. I spent a lot of time looking at them in stores, reading reviews & finally decided that Samsung would provide me the best value for my money. I purchased this 26" for my bedroom & it's the perfect size. I was a little nervous setting it up but it was so simple. From attaching the stand, hooking it up & setting up the menu options. The picture is amazing! The colors are wonderful, the blacks are not washed out at all but appear rich & dark. There are a number of setting options to achieve the perfect picture for you, including adjusting the backlight. The sound is good, for a bedroom tv I'm not looking for a movie theater experience & quite frankly, I wouldn't expect tv speakers to ever give me that. I would expect to buy separate speakers. The sound is just as good, if not better, then any past tv I have owned. I have a computer desk off to the side & often glance over at the tv and can view the screen just fine from side angles. There's also a sleep timer for turning both off & on. I've watched everything from movies to sports to regular shows. Also, for anyone nervous about getting this tv without HD, it's looks incredible even without the HD! There are tons of connections on this model too, including 3 HDMI (2 in the back & one on the side). There is a PC connection too but I haven't tried that or the game mode. I can't find a single negative thing to say & as a plus, the tv itself has a very classy sharp appearance. Very, very happy!

Samsung LNS4051D 40-Inch LCD HDTV Review

Samsung LNS4051D 40-Inch LCD HDTV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Flat HDTV prices are falling almost as fast as the stock market these days. It would seem that this might be the right time to jump into the HDTV craze. Let the research begin then. I'll get to the details of the Samsung unit itself after a brief, er, long background intro.
I tend to be the type of consumer that will read every unbiased CR style review, online article, visit every store within a 100-mile radius and test every model in existence--no matter what the purchase. This is particularly helpful when purchasing a television, since you really don't know just how good a picture will be, no matter what the specs say, until you see it side-by-side with the competition.
I've been holding out for the $2000 price-point for a large-screen Flat HDTV, and the time has now come when there are several options from which to chose. CR reports, quite accurately I might add, that Costco has some of the best prices among retailers, but I will say, as a HUGE Costco fan, that the selection is a bit limited, as is the nature of their business.
After looking at about 50 (literally) different Flat-TV's, and originally wanting to go with a Plasma, I narrowed the choice to a 37-inch LCD from Viewsonic, a 42-inch LCD from Philips, and two 40-inch Samsung LCD units. Consideration was made for size, picture quality, design and style, features, overall research and brand reputation/reviews, value, bang-for-the-buck and more. Say what you will about Plasma, and they are beautiful, I've seen too many red-glow, distorted and burned pictures, and the last straw was a brand new floor model that had already gone bad in 2-weeks at a local store. LCD it is then--I purchased the Viewsonic at Costco, only to receive a unit with a defective tuner, back to the store for a full refund--no worries. As I'm strolling through the aisles of another establishment, I come across a vision of beauty, she looks amazingly like Liberace's reincarnated baby-grand piano. She is brilliant in her little black dress, even standing next to the costliest supermodels from Pioneer and Sony--in fact, she may be more beautiful. The Samsung LNS4051D they tell me. Samsung name, 2 HDMI inputs, 4000:1 contrast ratio, PIP, you know the rest...and stunning good looks to boot! But the cost was too high. A few clicks later, I find her on Amazon for my target price, including shipping...S-O-O-O-L-D, says I!! Return policy is a bit harsh, but delivery was on-time, and price was unbeatable. Well done Amazon.
Panasonic may hold a slight edge in overall picture quality, but Samsung is the world's largest producer of LCD screens, and they can be quite proud of this unit.
A few areas for improvement--not even the most beautiful of ladies is perfect--blacks still need work, which is what keeps it from being the best-of-the-best, the remote needs work (don't they all), and once hung on the wall, the connections are nearly impossible to access, due to the back, rather than side connecting style.
Flat HDTV prices are slated to continue falling over the summer, and will then flatten out--if you are lucky, you might just be able to snag a date with one of these hot little numbers, before they're all spoken for.

I was moving into a new house and thought it was time to get a new TV. After doing extensive research, and not wanting to pay the current high price for HDTV, I decided on this new Sony Wega. It was a simple decision, really. I mean as far as non-HDTV TV's go, this set blows away the competition. the closest runner up in my opinion was the Toshiba... but the extra [money] for this TV is more than worth it.
The picture quality is amazing. No other set came close. Combined with the asthetics of the set itself, this is one beautiful TV.
As far as sound goes, this set is 10 times better than anything I heard from other TVs this size. With built in subwoofers and the "WOW" sound feature, the sound is full and rich.
I've had this set for a few months now and I'm very glad I spent the extra couple hundred to have a better viewing experience every time I turn on the TV.

VIZIO VX37L - 37" LCD TV - widescreen - 720p - HDTV Review

VIZIO VX37L - 37 LCD TV - widescreen - 720p - HDTV
Average Reviews:

I just bought this unit from Sears for $759, and it's been everything I expect. After reading the review at CNET, it appeared to be the LCD I wanted. I wasn't interested in 1080p because I'm neither a gamer or that overly concerned about seeing every blade of grass during a game. The Vizio VX37L is very adjustable as far as color - you will see reviews about its color settings out of the box (people look like they have terminal sunburn), but the unit is not only fully adjustable for red/green/blue and tint, but has a separate setting for each input (RF coax/antenna, A/V, component, HDMI) so if you like HDMI a little brighter than standard def shows, you can set it that way.
You'll also read comments around the internet about the sound quality. If you're an audiophile, just connect a sound system to the audio-out connections. For the integral speakers, the sound improves remarkably if you use an HDMI connection.
The 37-inch screen is the perfect swap if you're going from a 32-inch 4:3 unit. The picture height is almost identical, and you gain 7 inches in width to give you the 16:9 image.
If you're looking for HD on a budget, and aren't someone who must have maximum resolution, this is a very suitable television at an excellent value.

Sony Bravia KDF-37H1000 37-Inch 720p 3LCD Rear Projection HDTV
Average Reviews:

There is only one reason to pay $900 for a 37" LCD Projection HDTV...space. My 32" 4:3 TV died and it sat in a beautiful Oak entertainment center. I'm not ready to part with that furniture yet. The opening for the TV is made for an up to 35" standard TV. Sony was on the ball creating this HDTV for people like me.
Flat panel LCD's in this size range don't measure up to the brightness, contrast and color of the Sony Bravia. Read the specs and compare. Luckily when I was shopping around I was able to view this set next to several other LCD's and it easily showed them up.
When you get this thing hooked up, tune it to the National Geographic HD channel for eye popping results. I did find that I had to mess around with the picture settings quite a lot before I could find what worked for me. There are lots of options. Take your time with them.
The things that I didn't like about this set that took away the fifth star are:
1) Screen door effect. If you have been reading up on RP-LCD, you already have heard about it. Yep, its there. Although I haven't really seen it with the HD content. You really notice it on the low def stuff. It bugged me real bad the first week, but I hardly notice it much a week later.
2) Side mounted buttons. Here's a HDTV marketed directly to consumers that will be placing it in a cabinet. Move them to the front for this set.
3) Long, long, long warm-up time on the projector lamp. OMG, I'm back in the 60's waiting for my TV to warm up. We're talking 30+ seconds before the picture comes on. I got spoiled with the near instant on with my last 32" TV.
4) $200 to replace the projector lamp! Yikes, I hope I get all of my 8000 hours.
5) Trouble getting a learning remote to learn the special keys for Screen Zooming, Picture control, etc... Tried three different learning remotes and none of them could reproduce the signal. I hate juggling remotes.
Don't take any of the above as deal breakers. The screen door effect is minimal, buttons are hardly accessed, I've learned to have patience, 8000 hours is about 2.5-3 years at 8 hours a day and tomorrows remotes will probably work fine with it.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS -
Its now been two weeks with the Sony and I'm starting to notice something that is really bugging me. So you understand how bad, I'm considering returning the set over it. When watching anything, HDTV, SDTV, DVD, etc... I can see an interleave effect when the scene changes. I notice this about 70% of the time. My family swears they can't see it, but it is bugging me to death. If anyone else has this set and you see it too, please write a review and identify such.

I purchased this from Amazon.com, with the scheduled delivery from CEVA. Ordered last sunday, delivery was one week later. Having the option of sunday delivery was great, and the delivery was very professional and definitely white glove.
Two people brought the TV in (carrying properly as this is a plasma), opened the box, put the TV on the stand, powered the TV on and waited for me to check whether there is any problem with the TV. They also offered to remove packaging if I wanted to get rid of it. Sometimes you cannot even get such good service when you pay $100+ for shipping. Given that shipping was free, I was thrilled.
TV is awesome, right out of the box. It looks great, works great. Picture is top notch. I put in an HD-DVD version of Transformers and was amazed at the picture quality. This is my first plasma TV and I believe it is much better than LCD. I had a Samsung 4061F before, and this TV has better picture than that one, despite the Samsung being 1080P and this being 720P. There's no motion blur whatsoever on this TV.
Checking on the web a little, I made the settings to be: pic mode custom, contrast +78, brightness +57, color +53, tint -9, sharpness +29, everything else off, black levels light and temp normal. These settings turned out to be perfect for the TV.
Five stars for the TV, purchasing experience and the delivery service.

If you associate Samsung with so-so quality sold cheap, forget it. This set produces a very impressive picture. I bought mine on the recommendation of the Chief Engineer of the television station we both work at. What makes this set so special is the DLP technology. There is no CRT. Instead, the picture is produced by a beam that strikes a chip that's about the size of a postage stamp into which 10,000 tiny mirrors have been imbedded (I have no idea how they pulled that off). The set, although a 50-incher, weighs only 80 pounds. My only complaint: the remote is flimsy. If you're out to buy an HD set, check out DLP (Samsung is not the only manufacturer with the technology). Not long after buying the Samsung, I bought a 34-inch 16:9 Sony WEGA HD set for another room in my house. It's picture is on par with the Samsung, although the sound is superior. Who'd ever thought Samsung would rival Sony? Sort of like Lexus and Mercedes.

Samsung introduces a new generation digital TV that finally addresses high-definition performance, compact design and affordability when compared to other flat panel designs. The HLN507W displays 50 inches of breathtaking wide-screen viewing area that is elegantly framed in an ultra-light, thin-bezel cabinet. Weighing about 78 pounds and a mere 17.6 inches deep, the HLN507W fits almost anywhere. The secret to this engineering marvel - a compact digital projector powered by a single, postage stamp sized Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) that generates high definition video images. These video images are created by proprietary digital light processing (DLP) techniques, and then magnified by an advanced array of optics. Its fully digital video design processes combined with Samsung's new DNIe video enhancer optimizes all analog NTSC and wideband sources be it a VCR, DVD player, camcorder or TV programming from digital satellite receivers and HDTV tuners. The new DVI interface is compatible with the new generation cable, satellite and off-air high-definition receivers for a pure digital picture. Samsung's HLN507W will also accommodate a computer too with no burn-in or screen-aging issues to worry about. Hang it, mount it, rest it on a stand or wall-unit, and simply move it anywhere, its size and weight offers more placement possibilities over any other TV design. Finally, Samsung lets you put TV in its place.

I have this TV and enjoy the sound and picture quality. I'm a soundaholic. If you've never had a stereo or srs/home theater sound... it DOES take some time to adjust. The sound can be *VERY INTENSE*.
I suggest you adjust the sound; turn the TruSurround HD sound *TO OFF*, but do leave the TruVolumn *ON* (you can enter the graphic equalizer presets) use these to set the quality sound you enjoy most. When you do this it's of course 'best' to be playing music, music dvd IS BEST.
If you SET the preset equalizer setting to *FLAT OR OFF*... you will be able to enter and customize the settings on your (*bass & treble*) levels.
Don't hesitate to play around with the sound settings, one click will return it to the factory settings.
You will require a lower volumn level, significantly lower... the audio quality IS dynamic and intense for this TV.

I have had my Sony KDL-40S3000 set up for about a week now and could not be happier! Amazon.com had by far the best price around considering that you get free shipping and pay no tax, and trust me I surfed every online site and retail store for over a month before making my purchase.
I was about to go plasma with Samsung, until I saw it in store and hated the reflective black display and case as well as reading several poor customer reviews. This Sony set has a sexy matte black finish and the screen is clear and reflection free in any lighting! Sony TV's in my book are across the board the best blend of top technology, proven durability and quality as well as sleek cool looks. My family has always owned Sony TV's and have never had even one of them serviced, some still running are over 20 years old!
But back to my new KDL-40S3000..... It's a sure crowd pleaser in any home! As of now, there are no HD broadcast channels in the 1080p format, only 1080i which this TV with the native resolution of 720p displays vividly, so I would advise you to think about this if you are looking at some of Sony's 1080p models that cost a lot more. Along with the fact that because the majority of broadcast channels besides HD channels (1080i) on Digital cable and I believe even Satellite are still in the 480p format, a TV such as this one with 720p resolution will display a cleaner and sharper image than that of a 1080p model. Bottom line... unless you have a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player and want a barely noticeable sharper picture, Go With 720p, you will save money and not be sacrificing anything trust me!
As for features and sound quality, you will be overwhelmed with what Sony brings to the plate. The menu options and settings are extensive but yet fun with Sony's graphical onscreen display, but the picture right of the box is just as impressive. I am a big fan of surround sound systems, but so far I am completely satisfied with the KDL-40S3000's clear and projecting sound quality, and I seriously question the poor remarks from other reviews about this set being deficient in sound. The audio/video inputs and outputs of this set are numerous and the 2 HDMI hook-ups will meet the needs of most home users considering there are also 2 component connections and various other lower quality connections.
So in closing I would recommend the Sony KDL-40S3000 to any and everyone looking to get into the flat-panel market, hands-down!!! Yes, Sony may be a bit more money than comparable sized other brands, but you are paying for top notch quality, engineering, and styling and you will not regret a cent of it! Set your price range, determine the right size and viewing distance for your room and put Sony at the top of your list when shopping Amazon.com for the best price on your flat-panel TV! Good luck and I hope my review has helped. I know a flat-panel is a major purchase and it's worth the time and effort to write a review if you are truly impressed and satisfied to pass on a great experience to others!
