Polk Audio SurroundBar 50 Surround System (Single Speaker, Black) Review

Polk Audio SurroundBar 50 Surround System (Single Speaker, Black)

I got the SurroundBar 50 last week after a few days of research. If you're researching for single speaker surround sound solutions that means you cannot run wires in your room thanks to the landlord or your wife (welcome to my world hehe).
You have couple of options when you're looking for a single speaker solution for your home theater project, and I was down to Yamaha and Polk Audio. Between the two I chose Polk Audio over Yamaha because (A) Yamaha requires a perfect 4 wall room so that sound can bounce back off the walls and create the surround sound effect, which I don't have (cathedral ceiling, staircase in the middle of the house so no back wall and side walls are far apart.) and (B) Yamaha costs way more. Don't get me wrong, Yamaha is awesome from what I read on Amazon and on other sites, but SurroundBar/SurroundBar 50 plus a decent subwoofer cost less than a Yamaha (which has an integrated subwoofer).
To pair with my SurroundBar 50, I bought a Velodyne Minivee 10 subwoofer. It was a bit of an overkill in my situation. But I wanted to spend a bit more and get a great sounding sub in case I wanted to build a better home theater one day. You can pair SurroundBar 50 with any Polk Audio sub out there. PSW111 is a good one for example. I have an Onkyo A/V Receiver and an Onkyo DVD player. The setup was fairly easy. SurroundBar 50 comes with the audio cables ready to be hooked up between the bar and your receiver. Everything is color coded so you can't really go wrong here. I hooked up an RCA audio cable between my receiver and my sub's line level inputs. Total setup = 1 hour or less.
After configuring my receiver to use the new bar and sub, I tested the surround sound with Matrix, Gladiator and Pitch Black DVDs. SurroundBar 50 produces the "enveloping sound" as promised. I still need some adjustments to do later but so far I'm pretty impressed with what I have. The SDA technology Polk Audio offers does a great job. This product will NOT give you a true 5.1 surround sound experience, so if you're an audiophile this is not for you. This product performs really well in creating the 5.1 effect. In Pitch Black you really hear those flying creatures moving around and in Matrix it's a pleasure hearing bullets flying by and ricocheting.
Overall I'm very impressed. I'm just happy I was able to setup a surround sound system under an hour and without running wires going through walls and furniture and carpet etc. Your experience may vary from mine so go to your local electronics store and give this a test. If your wife is like mine who is against speakers and wires around the room then SurroundBar might be the solution for you too. :)

JBL ES90BK 4-Way, Dual 8-Inch Floorstanding Speaker - Black Review

JBL ES90BK 4-Way, Dual 8-Inch Floorstanding Speaker - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
See 3/19/2010 update below.
I'll start by saying that my 3 rating would be about a 7 on a 1 to 10 scale. Based on the overly strong midrange and the fact that JBL is having this speaker built in China, I can't give this a 4 out of 5.
Fit, finish, and appearance on this speaker is somewhat mixed. The front panel veneer is attractive and rolls to the top panel via the beveled edge at the top front. The front panel is made of MDF and appears to be either 3/4 or 1 inch thick. It sounds very solid when rapped with your knuckle. (This is a simple and quick test I would recommend for any speaker.) In general the front of the speaker looks very good.
The side panels are thinner MDF and have a plain black veneer with a fine texture. I can't tell whether they are 1/2 or 5/8 inch thick. The entire cabinet tapers from front to back, with the back only measuring 7 1/2 inches wide vs. 10 1/4 at the front. This tapered design isn't my first choice, but others may like it. The speakers have outboard feet pre-installed which yield good stability despite their height. If you don't like the looks you can install a set of inboard feet that is included in the box.
The bass port is fairly low on the back side just 5 inches above the bi-amp capable sets of binding posts for the speaker wire. These posts are really too close together for easy loosening and tightening, and the bottom pair is further hampered in this regard by their proximity to the panel that holds the posts. The posts include a set of preinstalled gold jumpers for when you are not bi-amping.
I'm using a Kenwood KR-V8080 receiver in stereo mode to drive these. I'm just listening to music with them and my source is a PC with HD audio sound built in (Analog Devices SoundMAX) and iTunes. Nearly all of my music is from CDs imported to Apple lossless compression, so I should be getting the same quality as using a CD player. I'm open to comments about possible shortcomings of this setup, but keep in mind that Apple lossless is just that, it gets decompressed on playback to the same bitstream as was on the CD. I'm not basing the review on any compressed material.
I've listened to a wide variety of rock, pop, and country music at this point, including some remastered material with excellent sound quality. (I have not listened to any classical or jazz.) I could go into details on particular tracks but it wouldn't change the big picture, which is that this speaker has a pronounced midrange that must be cut to really be musical.
I am using a 10 band Audio Control equalizer to unlock the potential of these speakers. You should be able to do the same with a software equalizer of some sort if the PC is your music source. What I have found to be the best is to cut the mids (500, 1000, and 2000 Hz) from 4 to 6 dB, and boost the treble sliders (4000, 8000, and 16000 Hz) by similar amounts. The bass needs a boost as well but it will vary based on the source CD and the placement of the speakers in the room. My listening room is fairly large as part of a combined living room / dining room that also joins into the foyer in a very open plan. The speakers are about 16 inches from the wall behind them but quite a ways from the side walls, and 7 feet apart.
The net result in a comparison between equalized and non-equalized is dramatic. The non equalized sound is very flat and overly 'warm', with vocals usually sounding like they're inside a muffled can. It's worth noting that I prefer a human ear sensitivity curve output for most sound systems and source material. I don't know if I've needed to apply 12 dB of difference between the highs and the mids though.
The sound with equalization ranges from good to very good. I can't yet say it's excellent. It is very clean and the bass is tight if you're not trying to shake the house too much. My 4 out of 5 rating on sound quality is based on the equalized version.
What I have noted with these JBLs is that the sliders I am cutting all are in the frequency range covered by the 4 inch midrange transducer. Whether JBL intended for these speakers to have such a strong midrange, or they've had some sort of manufacturing process control issue with their crossover network, I doubt that many listeners would disagree that bringing the mids down a good bit yields a much better sound. If out of the box they sounded closer to what they do with equalization I would give them perhaps an 8.5 out of 10, so consider that against the 3 out of 5 overall rating I'm giving here.
If you're going to use these for a high end home theater system you will need a subwoofer to really feel the low stuff, but for many users these will be enough and a sub won't be necessary. A 36 Hz -3 dB point is going to cover most everything but the low bass and earth shaking sound effects.
I have owned 3 other pairs of JBL speakers (including the L60T from the late 80s) and have listened to a few more, and this is a departure for JBL's normal tendencies in my experience. My L60T's are very bright and clean in the high range and the mids are not nearly as strong. The L60T is a 2 way design with a 1 inch titanium dome tweeter that must cover much of the midrange as well, so I was quite surprised that the ES90's 4 way design (with 2 specialized tweeters) also needs at least 3 dB more treble boost to come close to it. I'm still not sure it equals it. I'll update this review if my opinion changes. (In the past I've also auditioned Infinity, Polk, Boston Acoustics, Klipsch, and Bose. The best speakers I ever heard were some Infinity Reference Standard 4.5's back in the 80s. I've never been impressed much with the Klipsch I've heard, Polks I've heard were laid back and mellow, while the old JBL and Infinity speakers were very upfront and in your face with their pronounced and very clear high end.)
(For the argument against using equalization because it's not 'how the music was intended to sound', I would ask in what room? With the speakers positioned where? And which speakers? With which mastering? If you haven't tried using an equalizer or at least a 3 band setup with Bass, Midrange, and Treble controls, give it a try and cut the midrange. In general it will give the sound more depth and make it more listenable at both low and high volume levels. While it seems logical that simply boosting bass and treble would work, in my experience it doesn't work as well without a midrange control. The general shape of the curve I'm applying with the equalizer is consistent with many software equalizer presets for Rock and other music types, including some of the iTunes preset curves. The ear is most sensitive to midrange frequencies, and less so for the high and low ends. This is true for the audible threshold as well as the max you can listen to. Loudness controls offset this sensitivity for low listening levels by boosting bass and treble.)Update 3/19/2010:
I've just sent these speakers back. In comparison to my 20+ year old JBL L60T's, the old speakers are just clearly better. There is no doubt that the 1 inch titanium dome tweeters that JBL used for many years (including in the L60T, L80T, and L100T from the late 1980s) is better than the two tweeters in the ES90 put together. And the single 8 inch woofer in the L60T (with surrounds just recently replaced on both speakers) is not really giving anything up to the dual 8 inch woofers in the ES90. All in all a big letdown for me as a loyal JBL user.
I'll also downgrade my overall 7 out of 10 to perhaps 6.5 out of 10, and downgrade the equalized score to 7.5 out of 10.

Polk Audio TSi100 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) Review

Excellent sounding speakers for the money...leaps ahead of the Sony SS B-3000 speakers I first bought and tried...took them back after listening to the models side by side...Polks have significantly better overall sound, presense, stereo imaging, and bass. It's always interesting how size isn't the determining factor--the sony's are twice as big, but don't sound nearly as good. I'm running these with a subwoofer for an entertainment system, but even alone, they're great for a small bookshelf speaker. (If you're really on the cheap, the Sonys at only $100 aren't "terrible", but have very weak bass and not nearly the sound of the Polks...night and day).
Tip for reviewers...I wouldn't give low stars for screw ups by Amazon...rate the product itself (Polk speakers), then put a comment if you had trouble with Amazon.

Polk Audio AM1805 SurroundBar SDA Instant Home Theater (Black) Review

Polk Audio AM1805 SurroundBar SDA Instant Home Theater (Black)

I'll start with my current set up and what my expectations were. I have a 47" Philips LCD TV, all the major gaming systems, and I also use my LCD TV as a computer monitor. I was looking for a speaker system with a subwoofer for around $400. I didn't want to buy a receiver if I didn't have to for my set up. I had researched and heard several soundbar systems before deciding on this one. All of my gaming systems and my laptop connect directly into the TV through HDMI cables. The speakers are connected to the TV through the "TV Out" connection. Overall, I am very, very happy with it.
The soundbar itself is smaller than expected. The mid and high rannge sounds are great. One concern that I had with soundbar systems was the ability to hear dialogue. Many soundbar systems I listened to had muffled dialogue that was difficult to hear at times. This soundbar does not suffer from any of those qualities. Dialogue is easy to hear from all sources.
The subwoofer has very good bass output. One of the nicest things about this system is the fact that the subwoofer is wireless. I have a smaller living room, and 8 foot ceilings, so for my space this subwoofer is more than adequate. As other reviewers have noted, a seperate 5.1 or 7.1 system and seperate receiver have the potential of creating more robust sound. You have to consider the space you are working with and of course, your budget. The Polk soundbar is by far better than any speakers that an LCD TV can offer.
The best part about this system was the ease of set up. It took literally less than ten minutes to take everything out of the box and connect it to my TV. My universal remote control is used to adjust the volume. This system is great deal for the price, and the best part about the system was the ease of set up. It sounds fantastic, and provides a very full and pleasing bass. I am completely happy with this purchase, and I would buy it again in an instant.

I bought these speakers to replace the OEM units in my Honda S2000. The OEM speakers were part of a sad excuse for a car audio system. These speakers made a tremendous difference in overall sound quality and after I hooked them up to a small amp they got even better. These speakers do have to be tuned by the head unit however to bring out their optimum sound quality, and you will never get tremendous thumping bass out of these something I realized after putting them through the paces, but if your looking for a clean sounding well built product that fits in those tight areas, look no further. I wish I had more room in my car, but unfortuantely that's not changing. I imagine these speakers in a car with more room and a resulting larger sound stage would sound even better. Polk gets my vote for a quality product. I'm going to try out their line of subwoofers next I believe.

Polk Audio Monitor 50 2-Way Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Let me start by saying that I was looking for a pair of speakers to replace my Bose 701's. I love my Bose, but I felt that they were lacking in clarity on the higher end of the sound spectrum. So I decided to make them the front speakers of my home theater system, where the lack of high end sound clarity isn't as noticeable as when you are just sitting down listening to your favorite CD's. After much research I went to my local electronics store with a particular speaker in mind. I had decided on the Infinity Primus250. I was pleased with the highs that the Infinity's delivered, but before leaving I decided to listen to the Polk Monitor 50's because they were in the same price range and I know that Polk makes a quality product. After alternating listening to both speakers with a variety of music styles I was torn. Both speakers would have been a welcome addition to any home system, but the Polk speakers seemed to offer just a little more clarity on the higher end. The vocals and instumentation of the music seemed just a bit more alive with the Polks. I was right. When I got them home and hooked them up they sounded as good as they did in the store. So although I would not have been wrong if I had bought the Infinity's, I'm glad that I decided on the Polks. I hope this review has been helpful.

Polk Audio Surroundbar IHT 3000 Home Entertainment System (Black) Review

Polk Audio Surroundbar IHT 3000 Home Entertainment System (Black)

Originally I bought a Boston Acoustics Soundbar (see explanation below for returning it) but now I have the Polk Soundbar and love it. I found one major problem with setup. I am a wi fi household and the wireless subwoofer had a conflict with my network wi fi. I am not terribly knowledgeable about routers but after going to Cnet forums got the answer which I would like to share with you. My problem was I have a Roku box and I was unable to stream. It would begin and then stop. If I turned off the soundbar it worked perfectly. I put the sub woofer in various places based on Polk's instructions, trying to shield it from the wi fi signal but nothing worked. The answer turned out to be very simple. (I had even gone so far as to buy a new router which also didn't work for reasons which will become obvious if you continue reading.) All I had to do was bring up my router's configuration screen and change the channel setting. The Soundbar was set for channel one as was my wi fi. I first tried channel five and it almost worked but after a few minutes, it stalled again so I then changed to channel 11 the farthest and last choice and bingo, it worked great and continues to work great.
I live in a 1400 sq ft house and the living room is about 12' x 20'. This unit is actually a little too much for the size of the room but when I made the necessary changes in my tv sound setup and the Dish remote setup, it made a big difference. Sometimes the sound was shrill so I changed the treble and bass settings on my tv and they do work for the soundbar even when you are not using the tv sound which I found I don't really need. For music this soundbar is astounding. For speech it is excellent. I do have a hearing problem and since Netflix has no subtitles yet, I do need some help. My tv is an LG 55" LED and the sound is ok but this soundbar has solved our problems when watching a streaming Netflix movie. I also stream Leo LaPorte which is TWIT.tv and for him I don't need the soundbar because the sound is so clear but I still use it. The other night we watched a very old, 61 years, movie called Impact using the Polk soundbar and could hear every word clearly!!
Programming my Dish TV remote was simple so I only use the Polk remote when I want to change the sub woofer if it is just too much bass.
All in all, I love this unit. I have it standing on the cabinet in front of my tv with the sub woofer on the floor beside it. You can get even better bass if you put the sw in a corner of the room. I think it would be great even for a very large room since I sometimes have to turn it way down for some programs. For music, again, fantastic. Of course, you will be forced to turn it down for commercials, just can't solve that issue.
When I was listening to the Boston A and the Polk bars, I really thought that the Boston A was better because I was unable to adjust the sub woofer on the Polk. The salesman told me it had no controls on it, well, he was wrong, I can control it so you can set it any way you choose. After having the Polk for a month I feel it is ALMOST as good as the Boston A and since the Boston A only has audio out RCA jacks I couldn't buy it anyway.
This brings me to another very important point when shopping for any soundbar which is to be sure what your tv accomodates. (I suggest you download your TV manual and take the pages you need with you, showing what audio out jacks you have.) My tv, the LG, does NOT accomodate RCA jacks for audio out, only optical out. Remember, I had originally bought a Boston Acoustics soundbar and had to return it. Because I had to go back three times Best Buy agreed to sell me the Polk for $301, the same price I paid for the Boston Acoustics bar. I also could not get the enclosed optical cord to work but fortunately had bought one years ago which works great. The enclosed one is very thin and the one I had is much thicker, don't know if that was the reason. Optical cables are very difficult to insert so don't lose hope, eventually you will be successful.
Since many people lambast BB, I want to say that when I returned the first Boston unit, (it had obviously been returned by someone and I thought it was defective) they apologized and said I should have been charged the open box price ($269) so brought out another open box, which was sealed and had a big label saying Open Box on it. He opened it up and set it up and thinking he had confirmed that I had a headphone jack I could use, I bought it. Well, as luck would have it, no headphone jack on my LG and no optical on the Boston unit, why I cannot figure out. He went to a lot of trouble for so low a priced unit and I appreciated his effort. When I returned it again, he actually tried to avoid me, knowing that I would take up a lot of his time. As I understand it, BB sales people get bonuses at the end of the month based on sales so even though they don't get commissions as many other electronics stores, if still in existence, pay, they do make money on their sales. The higher their number, the more they get. But he did come over, finally, when I tracked him down and once again, brought out the soundbar and set it up to check. So kudos to Best Buy, San Rafael, this particular sales guy and to Polk.

Perhaps I was expecting too much. I read the reviews on the R15 and expected this would be similar - perhaps the R15s would live up to their rating (currently 4.5) and the description of "superior detail". However, I found these merely OK. Pretty good bass (these have the bass port pointing back, whereas the bass port in the R15s point forward) but muddled in the mids and highs, denying good definition of guitar chords and "waterdrop" effects, for instance. For reference, I'm using an Onkyo HT-R520 receiver, 18-gauge wiring, and I'm comparing these to the original Onkyo main speakers that came in a home-theater package.

Polk Audio Monitor 30 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) Review

Polk Audio Monitor 30 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, don't be mislead by the price. The Polk Monitor 30 has great potenial and a huge bargain at its close out price (replaced by TSi series which is nearly identical). A bookshelf with depth, both in that it protrudes twelve inches from front to rear when placed on a wall, and, also, provides ample bass for its stature. It matches well with Polk's CS1 or CS10 center channel speaker for surround systems as a front and surround channel, or can be paired with the larger M40 bookshelf, or M50 and M60 towers as a surround speaker. It should be able to outperform most satellite speaker systems, but will stand out prominently from the wall when hung from it's bracket. On opposite end of the hanging bracket, short legs keep the speaker evenly spaced from the wall and allow the rear port to breathe.
Since both Polk's Monitor/TSi bookshelf and center channel speakers provide ample levels of bass (55Hz), it offers more flexibility when used with a subwoofer than small satellite speakers. Subwoofer crossover can be set lower allowing the sub to handle the lower frequencies with more detail. While crossover with a satellite speaker generally should be set no lower than the 120-150Hz area, which is at the uppermost range of most subwoofers, the M30 can easily be adjusted down to the 60-80Hz area. Of course the extra speaker size can take more power and produce more volume than satellites, as well.
However, for front channel use the Monitor has limitations. For mid size rooms the Monitor 30 is a bit small as a front channel and noticeably lacking in bass detail no matter what the room dimension. There are bookshelfs that use larger mid/woofer drivers or at least two 5 inch drivers (and one tweeter) that can produce quite a bit more detail and volume in the lower frequencies. However, you'll have to spend at least $300 for such a pair that match the clarity and quality design of the Monitor 30. The other option is to purchase the Monitors for $100 and spend an additional $100-200 on a subwoofer to have even greater range than the larger bookshelfs.
I use four Monitor 30's as surround and rear channels in a fairly spacious room (16x24 & vaulted ceiling) with Polk Monitor 60 towers and CS1 in the front. Though the 30's are much closer to the listener than the fronts, the levels must be adjusted a couple of decibels higher to make surround effects really come out. In fairness, the front channels employ eight 5.25" drivers versus only two to four drivers depending on 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack. While listening to music, I prefer using Dolby ProLogicIIx (7.1 surround), rather than two channel stereo. Since the Monitor 30's match so seamlessly with the other speakers, the soundstage is opened up and less volume is needed.
Again, don't let the price fool you. There are many steeply priced speakers using same size drivers that will only marginally outperform and sometimes underperform the Monitor 30. The Dynaudio 52SE for example, costing around $1,000, when tested by Audioholics produced great lower bass until it bottomed out due to lack of internal bracing and overall driver design. When given time to break-in, matched appropriately with other speakers, and tuned with the latest A/V Receivers, the 30 can be a very solid performer.

Pros: Built like a tank
Simple setup
Cool factor of 10
Cons:
Should have blue ray at this price point.
Frankly I think it needs a subwoofer, Tried it for a few days with a Polk subwoofer and without. Yes it sounds decent without a sub, but only decent, not great. I have yet to hear anything even close to 5.1 or any type of surround. Upon contacting Polk, I was advised that this bar was NOT (unlike the soundbar series) designed to be used above the tv only below with the optimal placement directly in the front of the tv. Frankly the soundbar sitting in front of a 56 inch tv looks horrible, under it it looks built in. Polk indicating that could affect the sound field. Well thats just cute, the whole POINT of this system was it was supposed to give you the 5.1 effect regardless of placement or your position in the room!
It is a nice system, could use a tad more volume, not amazing with the surround, even though the wide open setup I heard at best buy was nothing short of amazing, but in my 12 X 12 living room, far less than spectacular.
Finally save your money, at this price point the 360 is not ready for prime time. If you are looking for solid tight sound in a high end soundbar this is it. If you are expecting the results Polk claims you will be badly disappointed. My old 5.1 theater in a box $300.00 system sounded a tad better frankly.UPDATE:
After owning this a few months I must say it is a complete waste of money.
There simply is no separation in the soundfield regardless of the input signal.
I have tweaked this system to no end with lackluster results.
For a grand there is a endless amount of equipment that you could purchase that would put this system to shame.
Polk missed on this one, if your heart is set on one, wait a while as the price is certain to go down due to the LARGE amount of people disappointed in this system.
This is nothing more than a fancy expensive 2.1 system. Save your money.

Polk Audio TSi300 Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Polk Audio TSi300 Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black)

I picked up a pair of TSi300's and they perform much better than I would expect from speakers at this price level. The TSi series is positioned between the Monitor series and the RTi series and rightfully so. They are an evolutionary improvement to the Monitor 50 (improved matierals, better bass response, better imaging, more detailed highs), though they lack the pristine clarity of the RTi series. They are, however, definitely a world ahead of the cheap R50's that they replaced in my living room, and will easily outperform budget speakers and even some higher end speakers.
What really strikes me about the TSi300's is the sophistication and dynamics of the sound they provide, especially relative to the price point they're at. Considering the compact size of the speakers, they provide suprisingly good sound imaging, projecting a wider sound-field than you'd initially expect, without getting needlessly loud or overbearing. They sound very smooth, rich, and natural....highlighting audio details with little effort. Where lesser speakers lose audio detail at low volumes, and sound harsh and wastefully loud at high volumes, the TSi300's brings out subtle details even at low levels, and really brings them to life at higher volumes. They're subtle and smooth when they should be, and can get loud and dramatic when they need to be, without any loss of detail or distortion going between volume levels.
Where I would say they lack a bit is in the mid-bass response. Unpaired with a subwoofer they at times sound a little brighter than I would like. Even when paired with a subwoofer covering the deep lows, there's a feeling that 'something's missing' at the mid-level. The TSi400 and 500's models have extra mid-bass drivers which give them more presence, but these come at a premium price, and once you start budgeting over 300 dollars per speaker, you avail yourself to deals on higher end lines such as the RTi series.
Low frequency bass response is what's expected of a floor standing speaker. For certain genres of music you could make by without a dedicated subwoofer, but for bass-heavy genres (hip-hop, electronica, smooth jazz etc etc), and for home theater use, the TSi300's, need a dedicated sub to cover the deep, heavy bass. This isn't to the fault of the TSi300's...the woofers on floorstanding speakers simply aren't designed to handle deep, dramatic bass.
Aesthetically, the rounded corners and sleek lines of the TSi series are very sexy, and I would say they're the best looking series in Polk's line-up. The piano black trimming along the top of the speaker matches very well with the bezels on most of today's HDTV offerings. The grill, piano black trim, and the cabinet flow smoothly together almost seamlessly, giving them a very clean, minimalistic look. Personally I prefer the cherry finish with Polk's speakers, as my living-room uses a lot cherry and dark ash woods. The TSi300's really look like an intentional part of my living room's decor, rather than random pieces of audio equipment sticking out like the elephant in an otherwise meticulously decorated room.
All in all, at [...] bucks a speaker, these perform extremely well for the price, and I couldn't ask for much more without expecting to pay much more. There is a part of me that would like more a bit more clarity and better mid-bass response, and I'll probably end up upgrading one day and moving these to the rears....but for what I paid I am downright impressed by these speakers, and am very happy with my purchase.
-----(edit)
After breaking them in a bit, the mid-ranges really started to come alive, and the TSi300's have quite a bit more presence now. I also found that by setting the cross-over frequency on my sub-woofer higher, I was able to better fill the mid-range gap from the TSi300.
For music, one may want to look at the TSi400 or 500's as they should provide more accurate low frequency performance. But a good sub that produces tight, accurate bass with the TSi300's will easily outperform the 400 or 500's without a sub for home theater use.
