Acoustic Research AWD210 Wireless Digital Stereo Headphones Review

Acoustic Research AWD210 Wireless Digital Stereo Headphones
Average Reviews:

I have now purchases 3 sets of the AWD210 headphones and 2 out of 3 have eventually broken at the left ear piece swivel joint (where the wires go through) under normal usage! I read another review from a guy who said that his headphones broke at the same location. Also, 1 of the 3 sets did not always go into charge mode and completely charge the batteries reliably every time and I only get an hour or so before they'd shut off. I tried to communicate with Acoustic Research Customer Service about the weak swivel joint plastic problem but I got only rudeness and denial out of the jerk I talked to about it. I sincerely hope they fix these problems for the next model as I will NOT buy another pair of the 210's, which is too bad, because the headphones sound GREAT in spite of the technical and quality issues. Hope my final set lasts longer than the other two did...

Sony SCD-CE595 5-Disc CD/Super Audio CD Player Review

Sony SCD-CE595 5-Disc CD/Super Audio CD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sony hit a home run with this, the best SACD player on the market for the average guy making the switch to super audio. When I changed from stereo to SACD I first bought one of those player that does both SACD and DVD. Nyet!
I don't care much about DVD and music is a large part of my life. I have collected classical recordings for 35 years and wanted to hear what those hybrid SACDs had to offer in SACD. My first experience was a nightmare; then I bought this machine.
Today I've listened to the Bach "St. Matthew Passion" highlights, Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique" and, now, Bach's "Two and Three Part Inventions" by Glenn Gould. Each of these SACDs delivers something a little different -- the Bach was made last year and is true surround sound; the Berlioz was recorded in 1959 and is three channel without surround sound; the Bach, recorded in 1964, is SACD in stereo only.
But each of these recordings, when played on this machine, sounds like they were made yesterday. This machine is easy to set up, easy to use, delivers great sound and has five disk trays so you can load it and play it all day long.
This is an excellent machine for people that want to hear SACD disks and doesn't cost much at most places. You'll like it and you'll really like the sound it produces for you.

Sony DAV-FX900W 5-Disc DVD Dream System (5.1 Channel) Review

Sony DAV-FX900W 5-Disc DVD Dream System (5.1 Channel)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had just purchased the Samsung HL-S4666W 46" DLP HDTV and I felt I needed a surround sound system to go with it. However, I didn' have thousands to spend, and I needed to get a progressive scan DVD player too. This system answered all my problems at once.
The set-up took about 1-2 hours (mostly just putting the speaker stands together, which are made of metal not cheap plastic). It was probably just as long to actually figure out how everything works. The manual has everything in it; however, it isn't in any logical order.
PROS:
-over 1000W of power
-"wireless" rear speakers w/separate amp (If you step in the way the connection is broken, but it goes back on within a second of walking out of the way)
-HDMI output & optical audio input (plus component, RCA, etc, etc)
-Auto-Calibration mic (I thought it worked pretty accurately, it tells you the distances that it thinks the speakers are from the mic, and they were dead-on in my case)
CONS:
-DVD turntable EXTREMELY slow (I was aware of this before I bought it, and I think most people can deal with it)
-DVD insertion is sort of sketchy (It doesn't tell you when to push the DVD into the slot, you just have to hold it there and hope it sucks it in. I find the easiest way is to "eject" the empty slot and then push the disc in right after the word "eject" comes off the lcd, I've looked all over the manual and haven't found a clear explanation of what I'm doing wrong)
-DVD FF/RW only has 2 speeds (really stupid)
Overall I love this system. I hooked up my PS2 with RCA audio to the receiver and started playing "Guitar Hero", and the sound was great. I've also thoroughly enjoyed watching concerts I have on DVD (Audioslave, Offspring, The Police, Depeche Mode, etc.). They all sound excellent. I have a DirecTV receiver, with the optical connection. It's great watching sporting events and such with this system.
I'm not a professional speaker guy by any means, but for what I use this system for, it sounds great. The DVD player is excellent barring its minor setbacks. On my TV the movies look great through the HDMI cable.
All in all, great starter system with everything included.
EDIT: Now that I've had this thing for a few months, I have a bit more to add. I think there should have been more inputs included with this item. I have a DirecTV box, a PS2, and a record player, and I can't hook up all 3 at the same time. There are a plethora of input types on the back, which is really nice so you can practically hook anything up, but only two things at the same time. Other than that its a great system. It has plenty of power, and I love cranking it up and listening whether it is NFL football or music CDs.

Philips HE591 Surround Sound Earbuds (Black) Review

Philips HE591 Surround Sound Earbuds (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NOTE: I've NOW had the HE591's now for almost two years and just had to replace my original pair because of a short. Considering I used them 3-4 days a week cutting grass, painting, etc., I think that is great! My new pair has the newer case, and I actually like it better than the old wrap-around one, and I noticed that the cord is thicker now, so maybe this set will last even longer. I would like to mention a negative, at least it could be perceived as a negative by some.... The music sounds so much better than with other ear buds, that I am often tempted to play the music louder, so one needs to discipline themselves with the volume. Actually, I find I can usually play my iPod, or other devices, at a lower volume and still have a great sound, so maybe these might be just the thing to have for children to use (and, of course, limiting the volume on their device, too). When I originally bought these I had the 60 GB Photo iPod and now I have the 80 GB one. The sound is even better on the newer iPod. My opinion is still high on these, even though I occasionally try to use the Shure and xTreme buds. In fact, I put those $99 Shure ones on just a week or so ago, and before I had even left the room, I took them off and put on the HE591's. Phillips has come-out with a new container for them, and it's OK, but that's not the real issue. No matter what I use, I go back to the HE591 (black)/592 (white). I've only had one problem with using them, a slight tenderness in my ears canal one time, but I turned the buds 30 degrees in my ear and everything was fine. And, now, I don't even have to do that. What follows is my original review.
Do yourself a favor and try these before forking over $100.00 on something that has great highs, but no lows... and what's really amazing is the the equalizer on my iPods actually do something with the HE591's. Here's my original review....
In reading the reviews of this product, I am having to ask myself, "Are they using the same earbuds that I'm using?" because I didn't have the issues that others have had. In fact, I've spent well over $500.00 trying to find a decent sounding pair of earbuds, and the Phillips HE591's give me exactly what I am wanting.
Before going any further, though, let me say, I'm an older reviewer, (age 56) who early in life really appreciated the sound of a good set of headphones. To put everything in perspective, I judge anything I put into my ears on these two sets of KOSS headphones: 1) the KOSS HV1A+, a lightweight set with foam cushions on the ear sets that allow one to hear good sound and still hear if someone in the room is calling to you, and 2) the KOSS PRO4AA, a heavy, recording studio-type of pair with air cushions around the ear sets that along with a heavy-duty spring on the headphones keeps out all sound and turns your ears blue after 20 minutes of using them. The HV1A+ has, what I thought, a good sound. The PRO4AA a great sound.
Now that I've said all of that to put things into perspective, what the hell does that have to do with these earbuds? EVERYTHING! Because if the sound isn't good, why bother? And, because I've used mine with iPods, which I thought didn't have that great of a sound to begin with, I had sort of lowered my expectations of what kind of quality in sound I could get with my iPod. Lower them no more. The Philips HE591 has everything I wanted in an earbud for my iPod. It gives me the highs, the lows, and sort of an ambiance of background sound, too, that makes the music come through GREAT. And, as if I might be stretching things a bit, when you go to use the equalizer function on your iPod, the sound actually, and very noticeably, varies, like it should.
What other earbuds have I used before the Philips HE591:
Xtreme Mac IPD-FSE00FS1, which you can find between $99 and $150.00. These give great high sounds, and you realize that there were notes and instruments being played that you hadn't heard before. The low sounds, though, were under-represented. The equalizer settings on the iPod (my current one is the 60GB Video unit, but I also have the 60 GB Photo one) didn't seem to change the sound much.
Shure E2c, which you can find between $99 and $125.00. These also gave me great high sounds, like the Xtreme Mac, and the equalizer settings varied more, but it, also, had issues with producing the low sounds.
Sony earbuds. I tried several versions from $20 to $49.00, with the $29 version and the $49 version seemingly having the same sound. I don't have the material on these, but the best ones cost around $29.00, or so, at Wal-mart. They had a great bass sound, but not much treble. The equalizer setting didn't make it vary much.
Now, I know I don't have the ears of a 20 year old, but I do have "perfect" pitch, and I know sound: my receiver unit at home is a Denon AVR-4802R. I like my DVD DTS sound system at home with it's 7 channel sound (counting the subwoofer) that I've augmented with two side channels, and I like the 5-channel DVD DTS sound in my car.
The Philips HE591 is not only a better buy, but to me, it gives you a better sound.
Other aspects of it:
The primary cord is heavy, but after the split the cords for the earpieces are normal in size. The earbuds come with two sets of rubber ear pieces. They look the same size, but one may be smaller. Whatever the case, it is nice to have an extra set. The ear pieces have a hard extension that you can use to set the earbuds into your ears.
The cords for the earpieces are of different length, so it easier to deal with if you wear your device on one of your hips.
The case is rubberized and seems less clumbersome than some units, and about as easy to use as the Shure case. The Xtreme Mac case will allow you to either roll-it-un and wrap it, or just roll-it-up and tuck it in, which wasn't too bad of an idea.
All-in-all, I am elated to have found the Philips earbuds, and I hope that anyone who tries them will be as satisfied as I am.
On a sad note, though, having done all of this listening, I am not as enamoured with my KOSS HV1A+ headphones as I used to be.They still let me listen to much and hear what's going on in the room (someone had an issue with that with the Philips, but I didn't), but the HV1A's just didn't have the crispness of the Philips earbuds, so I'm saddened that I've now lowered that KOSS unit off of its pedestal.
At a price of $19 to $29, these are a bargain, and it comes in white as model HE592

Sony STR-DE695 - AV receiver - 5.1 channel Review

Sony STR-DE695 - AV receiver - 5.1 channel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recently my 1992 vintage Sony STR-D595 receiver went on the blink. So I was ready to replace it with something as close to the state-of-the-art as possible (without breaking the bank).
The STR-DE695 definitely delivers with 6.1 channel and HD-Pass component video capabilities. I have only two real complaints with this receiver. The AM radio section lacks any real sensitivity. Only the strongest stations will come thru and that is assuming you have a decent antenna attached. (Unfortunately, this is a common compaint with many lower end receivers.) If you live in a rural area and rely on good AM reception, this receiver is not for you.
The other is the user manual. Though I read it cover-to-cover prior to using the receiver, there are many areas it fails to cover. The Universal multi-function remote is not explained very well though it does work well once you get used to it. I have several components from different brands and this remote can handle most of them all pretty well. (If your stereo components are more than 10 years old, you may find the supplied remote to not be all that effective.)
All in all though: great sound, great capabilities, for a great price! (I bought mine for $239 plus tax.)
Chris

Polk Audio Monitor 50 2-Way Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Polk Audio Monitor 50 2-Way Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying that I was looking for a pair of speakers to replace my Bose 701's. I love my Bose, but I felt that they were lacking in clarity on the higher end of the sound spectrum. So I decided to make them the front speakers of my home theater system, where the lack of high end sound clarity isn't as noticeable as when you are just sitting down listening to your favorite CD's. After much research I went to my local electronics store with a particular speaker in mind. I had decided on the Infinity Primus250. I was pleased with the highs that the Infinity's delivered, but before leaving I decided to listen to the Polk Monitor 50's because they were in the same price range and I know that Polk makes a quality product. After alternating listening to both speakers with a variety of music styles I was torn. Both speakers would have been a welcome addition to any home system, but the Polk speakers seemed to offer just a little more clarity on the higher end. The vocals and instumentation of the music seemed just a bit more alive with the Polks. I was right. When I got them home and hooked them up they sounded as good as they did in the store. So although I would not have been wrong if I had bought the Infinity's, I'm glad that I decided on the Polks. I hope this review has been helpful.

I just installed my new receiver last night - in a breeze.
This replaces my high-end Yamaha RX-V890; I needed 2 optical audio inputs. I tested all the functions and I am totally impressed and satisfied with my purchase. What is most important, is to have good speakers. Great quality is no longer a luxury. A better surprise, this is a 2006 model. WOW!

The receiver is built around Yamaha's proprietary surround sound technology and a powerful 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter that maximizes the signal quality, ensuring that everything from two-channel audio sources to 5.1-channel DVDs sound rich, immersive, and dynamic. Plus, the receiver's wide 10 Hz to 100 kHz frequency range helps digital audio sources like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD reach their full potential.

The Music DSP modes, meanwhile, range from 2-Channel Stereo to Concert Hall to Roxy Theatre, the latter of which reproduces the dynamic music environment of one of L.A.'s legendary rock clubs. And, of course, the HTR-5930 handles standard processing for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro Logic II sources.
What really makes the HTR-5930 tick, however, are the extras, such as Silent Cinema, a Yamaha-exclusive technology that lets you enjoy multichannel music or movie sound through ordinary headphones, and a night listening mode that lowers the volume during loud passages so the kids don't jolt awake after hearing explosions and other special effects from the next room. Plus, the HTR-5930 not only comes with a standard AM/FM tuner, but is also XM satellite radio ready. BOSE 201-V Stereo Loudspeakers (Pair) - Black Review

BOSE 201-V Stereo Loudspeakers (Pair) - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Moving from a large home into a smaller one it seemed the right time to set the huge twenty-six year old quasi-wood enclosures in the car, take them to Goodwill and buy something of current technology yet in a smaller package. After researching big and small and a dozen brand names we went off in search of the right speakers for us in our smaller setting. Most we listened to were terrible. Inaudible, booming with no clarity or tinny, even the names of note. Then we met Dr. Bose's collection of speakers. We were used to our 12" woofer, a couple of tweeters and a bass that boomed until our chest vibrated. Though we didn't get the booming chest, we got clarity and sound that was true to the instruments and the voices. My receiver is twenty-six years old too and is screaming to be replaced but even with it and it's limited ability to equalize, the true sound we hear from the set of Bose speakers quickly grew on us and proved satisfying. I do miss the ability to go for the booming subwoofer sound when we wish and may buy a small unit to fill the gap. But....if we don't add to this set, we are well satisfied with the Bose speakers and feel fine about spending a few dollars more for a quality sound. So far I haven't found a way to distort the sound and am also happy that we reach a nice volume level without pushing the slider.
I have read mixed reviews from "uch" to "the absolute best" and wonder how so many mixed expectations can precede the purchase of a set of speakers. We, as life long lovers of music and musicans ourselves, are seriously pleased with the Bose speakers even with the slightly less "boom" to which we are accustomed.

Bose's proprietary Direct/Reflecting speaker technology uses the walls and flat surfaces of your room to more closely approximate the sound in a concert hall. From cutting-edge DVDs to your vintage records, you'll enjoy larger-than-life spaciousness in nearly all you listen to, thanks in part to Bose's precisely angled, 2.5-inch proprietary Stereo Targeting tweeters. The speakers' broad-dispersion Stereo Everywhere design lets you enjoy full stereo sound throughout the listening area, no matter where you sit or stand. Instead of concentrating the stereo effects into a single "sweet spot," the 201 bookshelf speakers are engineered to deliver realistic performance almost anywhere in the room. The speakers each use a single 6.5-inch woofer and a flared-slot port--a specially engineered design wherein woofer and port geometry complement each other to reduce air turbulence. Polk Audio Monitor 30 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) Review

Polk Audio Monitor 30 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, don't be mislead by the price. The Polk Monitor 30 has great potenial and a huge bargain at its close out price (replaced by TSi series which is nearly identical). A bookshelf with depth, both in that it protrudes twelve inches from front to rear when placed on a wall, and, also, provides ample bass for its stature. It matches well with Polk's CS1 or CS10 center channel speaker for surround systems as a front and surround channel, or can be paired with the larger M40 bookshelf, or M50 and M60 towers as a surround speaker. It should be able to outperform most satellite speaker systems, but will stand out prominently from the wall when hung from it's bracket. On opposite end of the hanging bracket, short legs keep the speaker evenly spaced from the wall and allow the rear port to breathe.
Since both Polk's Monitor/TSi bookshelf and center channel speakers provide ample levels of bass (55Hz), it offers more flexibility when used with a subwoofer than small satellite speakers. Subwoofer crossover can be set lower allowing the sub to handle the lower frequencies with more detail. While crossover with a satellite speaker generally should be set no lower than the 120-150Hz area, which is at the uppermost range of most subwoofers, the M30 can easily be adjusted down to the 60-80Hz area. Of course the extra speaker size can take more power and produce more volume than satellites, as well.
However, for front channel use the Monitor has limitations. For mid size rooms the Monitor 30 is a bit small as a front channel and noticeably lacking in bass detail no matter what the room dimension. There are bookshelfs that use larger mid/woofer drivers or at least two 5 inch drivers (and one tweeter) that can produce quite a bit more detail and volume in the lower frequencies. However, you'll have to spend at least $300 for such a pair that match the clarity and quality design of the Monitor 30. The other option is to purchase the Monitors for $100 and spend an additional $100-200 on a subwoofer to have even greater range than the larger bookshelfs.
I use four Monitor 30's as surround and rear channels in a fairly spacious room (16x24 & vaulted ceiling) with Polk Monitor 60 towers and CS1 in the front. Though the 30's are much closer to the listener than the fronts, the levels must be adjusted a couple of decibels higher to make surround effects really come out. In fairness, the front channels employ eight 5.25" drivers versus only two to four drivers depending on 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack. While listening to music, I prefer using Dolby ProLogicIIx (7.1 surround), rather than two channel stereo. Since the Monitor 30's match so seamlessly with the other speakers, the soundstage is opened up and less volume is needed.
Again, don't let the price fool you. There are many steeply priced speakers using same size drivers that will only marginally outperform and sometimes underperform the Monitor 30. The Dynaudio 52SE for example, costing around $1,000, when tested by Audioholics produced great lower bass until it bottomed out due to lack of internal bracing and overall driver design. When given time to break-in, matched appropriately with other speakers, and tuned with the latest A/V Receivers, the 30 can be a very solid performer.
