Yamaha RX-397 100 Watt Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver Review

Yamaha RX-397 100 Watt Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver

Despite the current fad for multi-channel audio/video receivers, the majority of people still listen to music with two speakers and only need a two-channel stereo receiver to drive them. As fanatic audiophiles with excellent stereo speakers, my wife and I recently purchased this receiver because of very good previous experience with Yamaha electronics products. This is a superb receiver in all respects. Some people may think that they need more than this receiver's rated power of 50 watts per channel, but Yamaha's power ratings are extremely conservative and this receiver will drive virtually any speakers to deafening levels (which I don't recommend doing). More important than it's ample power is its very low distortion. Yamaha specializes in low distortion products for very clean sound. In addition to robust power and ultra-low distortion the RX-397 has a full complement of controls, plus an easy to use remote. But as a fanatic audiophile another feature, typical of Yamaha, which I particularly appreciate is a button which sends the signal from our CD player (or any other non-phono cartridge input) directly to the amplifier -- bypassing the preamp circuitry, which is not needed except when playing LPs (which most people rarely do these days) -- for the lowest distortion and best signal to noise ratio. There are plenty of slighty less expensive -- and less good -- stereo receivers available, but if you want suberb performance at a moderate price I highly recommend this Yamaha.

Yamaha HTR-5660 6-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver Review

Yamaha HTR-5660 6-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a hardcore audiophile, but I did a fair amount of research before buying this receiver. I found this unit has all of the features I was looking for, and at an exceptional price.
This receiver is basically the new version of the 5560. It adds 10 watts per channel for 85 watts each. It also now has digital audio inputs and s-video inputs for every video input including the front one. This receiver is also basically identical to the RX-V640 that Yamaha sells through it's retail channels. According the Yamaha website, the only difference is the coloring of the lettering on the front of the receiver.
There was a list of features I was looking for in a receiver and this met all my criteria. Support for both 6.1 channel Dolby Digital and DTS were a must. For my particular application 7.1 channel surround was overkill, and there currently aren't that many sources for it. Discrete circuitry for each speaker is a must. No spring clips for speaker connections. All support banana clips. I use a DVR and a VCR, so I wanted 2 AV in/out hookups. I have an oddly shaped room with less than optimal speaker placement, so I wanted the ability to adjust each speaker volume level independently. I don't have a HDTV compatible TV yet, but I wanted composite video support for when I get one. This receiver has 2 composite inputs and 1 output. Size was also a consideration for me as the receiver would have to fit into an entertainment center. The Onkyo I was looking at had similar features, but was just too massive to fit. The Yamaha was a more reasonable size.
Performance wise, I have been very impressed with the Yamaha. With the ability to adjust each speaker volume level independently, I was able to set it up to create impressive surround effects despite my less than optimal room. The Dolby Digital and DTS effects are impressive. When the receiver detects a DD or DTS source, it switches to those modes automatically. There are 40+ additional surround modes. Yamaha apparently went to a lot of trouble to develop them, but in my opinion they are mostly useless. I've settled on Dolby Surround II for most of my non-Dolby Digital AV viewing which is very impressive so far. 6 channel stereo is great for listening to music and really allows you to take advantage of your surround system. I've tried most of the other surround modes. Some are interesting, but I haven't found that I use them much. The included antennas for AM and FM reception are adequate and I found that my reception was much improved over my last receiver (Sony).
I found the remote and manual to be adequate and simple to use. I was able to adjust most of the settings on the receiver with minimal hassle. I was able to map all of the remote features to my Sony learning remote and it works fine.
If you are looking for a step above entry level receiver with many of the features and quality of the high end models, I highly recommend this model. I did a search on the internet and found many stores offering it at very attractive prices. I called J&R and they matched the lowest internet price and I had the receiver in 2 days. They also have a very reasonable return policy though I haven't had to test it yet.

Packed with connections and proprietary audio-enhancing technologies, Yamaha's HTR-5660 is your gateway to home-theater bliss. The receiver can power two rooms at once (one in surround sound, the other in stereo), and it offers the convenience of DVD-Audio/multichannel SACD-ready six-channel analog inputs alongside the latest 6.1-channel surround processing and premium Yamaha features. When hooked up with the digital-audio output from a DVD-Video player or digital satellite receiver, the 85 watts-per-channel HTR-5660 (105 wpc peak) handles 5.1-channel surround decoding for both major formats, Dolby Digital and DTS. In addition, the HTR-5660 also processes Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES, which create an even more expansive soundfield through the use of a center-rear surround channel, totaling six discrete full-range channels in addition to the LFE (low-frequency effects) channel: left, center, right, and left, center, and right surround. Want even higher power? The receiver offers 6.1-channel preamp outputs for direct hookup with a six-channel power amplifier.Exclusive Yamaha technologies include Quad-Field Cinema DSP (based on a wealth of measured data in real studios and halls, this processing is designed to highlight the full potential of movie sound mixes), Silent Cinema (which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary stereo headphones, not included), and the company's YSS-938 32-bit DSP chip providing 25 unique surround algorithms with 44 variations to help you perfectly match your simulated acoustic space to your video program.Non-Dolby Digital and DTS sources can benefit from surround processing, too--with enhanced directional steering over standard four-channel Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source--whether that's a TV broadcast, VHS tapes, or your favorite CDs, cassettes, and LPs. Pro Logic II delivers full-bandwidth stereo surround channels with 40 dB of left-right separation. And, when you're listening to multichannel presentations late at night, you'll appreciate Silent Cinema, which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary stereo headphones (not included). Silent Cinema uses unique parameters for each soundfield to ensure accurate headphone representations of each soundfield. Then there's the six-channel DVD-Audio/SACD-ready inputs mentioned above. If these formats are so high-tech, you might wonder, why do you need analog inputs to appreciate them? Because, for reasons of content protection, DVD-Audio and SACD players perform their own digital-to-analog conversion, passing high-resolution analog, rather than digital, signals on to your amplifier. (And analog, after all, is what your amp feeds your speakers.)The versatile unit offers 12 video input connections (with five S-video inputs and two high-resolution component-video inputs), five fixed and assignable digital-audio inputs (great for DVD, DSS, CD, laserdisc, gaming consoles, or minidisc), and front-panel input connections for your camcorder or other spontaneous hookup (including S-video and an optical digital-audio in). The HTR-5660 comes with a preset remote control.Last, but certainly not least, the HTR-5660 benefits from Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) build philosophy. ToP-ART's goal is to maximize digital quality while minimizing analog circuitry. The culmination of the best digital engineering and design possible, it brings together several key elements to create the best-sounding, easiest-to-use A/V components available. What's in the Box Receiver, remote control, remote batteries, FM wire antenna, AM loop antenna, a user's manual, warranty information, and registration information.

Sherwood RX-4105 2-Channel 100-Watt Stereo Receiver Review

Sherwood RX-4105 2-Channel 100-Watt Stereo Receiver
Average Reviews:

This Sherwood (noted brand years ago, now mysterious) might be a decent bargain for twice the money. It's stripped down by present standards -- two channels only, no phonograph input. It's dead quiet and extremely clean sounding. I can't hear any emphases or dead spots in the frequencies. The tuner is exceptionally good; I am surprised at the success I'm having with it in a poor reception area, with only the antennas that are supplied. Appearance and quality are fine: nice black steel case, solid buttons, one big old volume knob. It was all I needed, so I'm very pleased. Going to get another for a computer amp.

Sherwood's incredibly affordable RX-4105 offers integrated preamplification and amplification, inputs for numerous audio source components, and advanced radio tuning and station access. The receiver delivers 100 watts RMS per channel x 2 for strong, clear sound across the audible spectrum--even at low listening levels. The company has lowered the amplifier's distortion relative to the previous model (the RX-4105), to less than 0.08 percent, while also giving the receiver a new layout borrowed from its higher-end components. The RX-4105 uses totally discrete amplifiers for all channels (TDAS) to maintain its high power and low distortion. Use the receiver's A and B clip-type speaker outputs to power 2 different rooms, or to biwire a pair of speakers for more efficient amplification (with A outputs driving the woofers, for instance, and the B outputs driving the tweeters--make sure your speakers are compatible if this is a key feature for you). The receiver also offers a handy 25-key remote control and switching for 2 pair of loudspeakers. Audio inputs switch between and amplify up to 4 additional components, including 2 requiring both inputs and outputs (such as a cassette deck and a VCR). The built-in AM/FM tuner features 30 station presets and auto station setup.Other features include bass and treble tone controls, a dimmable fluorescent display, and a .25-inch headphone jack for private listening. What's in the Box Sherwood RX-4105 receiver, remote control, AC power supply cord, FM indoor antenna, AM loop antenna set, and owner's manual.

SHERWOOD RD-7405HDR 7.1-Channel 70-Watt Dual-Zone A/V Receiver with HD Radio Review

SHERWOOD RD-7405HDR 7.1-Channel 70-Watt Dual-Zone A/V Receiver with HD Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this receiver specifically for the HD radio feature and I am pleased with my purchase.
I live in the Philadelphia area and I like classical music. Unfortunately, there are no "normal" stations that broadcast classical in the evening. But when I bought this receiver, I was able to receive 3 stations in the area that broadcast classical music on HD2. It's a special treat to listen to my music when I come home.
Before going on, I think it is fair to caution you that before purchasing this receiver, it would be wise to research HD and see which stations broadcast in HD2 or HD3 in your area. There may not be too many since this is a new technology. Many stations now broadcast in HD, which are accessable with any AM or FM radio. But the stations labeled HD2 or HD3 can only be picked up with an HD receiver. Please do your homework before investing in this or any other HD receiver.
When you tune into any HD2 or HD3 station, you will probably hear your station come in, then drop out for anywhere between 3 to 30 seconds. Don't get upset. This is usually the case. Virtually all HD2 and HD3 stations do not broadcast on a high power output due to FCC regulations at this time. The drop out is the Sherwood receiver pulling in the weak station, then compensating for it. Be patient. If the station isn't too far away, you will receive it. Also, there are times when a station is temporarily lost and reverts to the primary HD channel. For example, I was listening to WPEN-FM HD2 this morning. Suddenly, the audio dropped out for about 10 seconds, then I heard sports talk. This is a rare occurence but it can happen. When the signal strength of your station is too weak for one reason or another, this happens. Maybe someone was at the tower site making an adjustment. When the signal temporarily drops out, all HD radios are programmed to return to their regular channel. In this case, it went from WPEN HD2 classical (680 watts output) to WPEN HD sports talk (15 kWatts output). I tried and succeeded in returning to my HD2 channel within 2 minutes. I had no more signal strength issues for the rest of the day.
Be sure to install a dipole antenna. I went out and bought a cheap $3 one from the radio store. Then I taped it to the wall and made certain that the ends were as far apart from each other as possible. The antenna that comes with the set is not a dipole and will not work as well for you as this one.
Once again, do your homework. Check to see what stations are in your area and enjoy your purchase.

Sony STR-DE595 - AV receiver - 5.1 channel Review

Sony STR-DE595 - AV receiver - 5.1 channel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently received this Sony receiver and am very pleased with it. The hook up was quick and easy and the owners manual is well-written. I wanted something specifically with Optical sound inputs and this unit has not one, but two of them, along with a digital coaxial input port. The first thing I did upon hooking up this receiver was to play a DVD which I had just recently played on my non-optical receiver that I am replacing.
Let me tell you...I started hearing sounds from this DVD that I never heard before!! I just stood in the middle of the room laughing at the amazing sound that was now coming from my speakers! I now know what true 5.1 surround sound is supposed to sound like. The channel separation was amazing and the multiple output modes (movie, music, concert hall, etc.) were fun to play with. I am able to tell this receiver exactly how far away from the speakers I am sitting and even tell it if the rear channel speakers are sitting high or low. This receiver has a large variety of customizable features that are simple enough for a novice like me to understand and program. The price is great, the features are great and I am completely pleased and cannot imagine upgrading again for a long, long time.

This full-featured surround receiver is ready to take on media of today and tomorrow. The STR-DE595 pumps out 100 watts per channel across five main channels (left, right, center, left/right surround) and has a dedicated subwoofer output for a seventh. You get everything from Dolby Digital and DTS surround decoding to Dolby Pro Logic II processing (creating 5.1 channels from two) and 5.1-channel analog inputs to accommodate the latest high-resolution audio formats. The receiver includes an FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM) and three video inputs to simplify switching between components and your television. Two of the inputs are for standard composite-video (yellow RCA jack), while the third is ready for wide bandwidth (80 MHz) high-definition component-video signals. There's no phono input, but the unit's two stereo and one multichannel analog audio inputs simplify hookup of, for instance, a cassette deck, a VCR, and a high-resolution audio device that decodes formats like SACD and DVD-Audio. Three digital-audio inputs (two optical and one coaxial) accept bitstream feeds from DVD players, CD players, and other digital devices. An additional "B" speaker output lets you enjoy music or movie sound in a room other than your central listening area (speaker cable not included). What's in the Box Receiver, UniCommander preprogrammed remote control, 2 AA batteries, AM loop antenna, FM wire antenna, a sheet on correct loudspeaker connections, owner registration card, user's manual, and warranty information.

Yamaha RX-797 Audio/Video Receiver Review

Yamaha RX-797 Audio/Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent 2-channel Stereo Receiver, for several reasons. Let me explain why I chose this brand/model over others and how I came to it. If you are in the market for Stereo Receiver, it may be useful for you.
A few months ago, I was listening to a jazz CD on my cheap ($200) Sony Home-Theater-In-A-Box and noticed that the sound was noticeably tighter than when I listened to it on my much more expensive, but significantly older stereo system. My old stereo system was purchased as separate components in 1993. It consisted of Sony STR-D990 Receiver ($400), single-disc Sony CDP-211 CD player ($100) and pair of Advent Baby II speakers ($250). Mind you, each of these components work and sound as good today as they did 15 years ago at the time of purchase (kudos to Sony for that), but I suppose I'm getting a little pickier now that I'm in my 30s. Music plays a MUCH larger role in my life than movies or television does (hence the cheap Home Theater set-up), so I decided I needed to upgrade.
PRIORITIES: 1) SPEAKERS--> 2) RECEIVER--> 3) CD PLAYER --> 4) CABLING/INTERCONNECTS
I decided that speakers were most important and thus the place to begin. After reading several reviews, I decided that Polk Audio Rti6s might be a good choice. I went to a retail store to listen to them and they sounded really good, but then the sales associate let me listen to the Polk Audio Lsi9s. Whew! They just blew me away. I had never heard anything like them. While the Rti6s run for $270, the Lsi9s are $900, but well worth it for that price, as a long-term investment (Polks come with a 5-year warranty). But I noticed that these run at 4 ohms and need a low-impedance amplifier/receiver, that is, one equipped with so-called "high current amplification," to drive them. Well, my old Sony did not have this function (it could take only 8-0hm current speakers). So, I looked all around for a receiver that could fit the bill and the Yamaha RX line became the obvious choice, after reading positive review after positive review. Since the Lsi9s can handle 200 watts per channel, I chose the RX-797 because while it has a power rating of 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms, it allows one to use two 4-ohm speakers and when doing so there is a power boost. Customer representatives from various retailers couldn't give me an exact watt rating (because Yamaha does not conduct tests at with 4-ohm speakers), but the general concensus was that it would increase to about 140 watts per channel with 4-ohm speakers. (I just didn't want to shortchange my speakers). I also chose this receiver because of the extremely low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) rating of .019% as well as the Pure Direct and CD Direct modes for the lowest possible distortion. (Compare these features to say Onxyo and Harmon Kardon A/V receivers in this range and you'll see that the advantage lay with Yamaha).
When the RX-797 arrived, it not only lived up to but exceeded my expectations. Paired with the Lsi9s, I can hear a much, much crisper separation of instruments, and this is especially nice for my digitally remastered jazz CDs. I live in an apartment complex now and never have the need to turn the volume beyond the 9 o'clock position. I have gone up to 11 o'clock for testing (when I knew my neighbors weren't in!) and, as expected with these ratings, I couldn't hear any distortion whatsoever. (I can't wait until I move into a house for a larger sound stage). Other pluses: The knobs and controls have a nice solid feel and look great. It picks up many more FM radio stations than my old receiver, and the reception is noticeably cleaner. The remote is simple and sensible (just how a remote should be). My only gripe is that one cannot program CD players made by other manufacturers with this remote, but perhaps thats standard practice. This has other nice features such as being XM Satellite Radio Ready and dual room/dual source for those who are interested, but the main selling points for me were the 4-ohm capability, the wattage rating and the extremely low distortion. The fine looks and sensible controls/display and remote are icing on the cake.
I found one from an authorized dealer by a fluke for $350, but certainly would have been willing to pay the full $499. If you see one for less than $450, be sure to first confirm with the seller (or better yet Yamaha) that they are indeed an authorized dealer; otherwise your two-year warranty won't be honored if you run into problems (not that I'm expecting to).
In sum, if you are looking for a receiver with ample, clean power, extremely low distortion, the abilitiy to drive 4-, 6- or 8-ohm loads, excellent FM reception, and easy to use and well laid-out functions for 2 channel (as opposed to Home Theater) listening, I don't believe you can do better for under $600 than Yamaha's RX-797 receiver.

Sony STR-DE675 Surround Sound Receiver Review

Sony STR-DE675 Surround Sound Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've had this receiver for about 18 months. From the day we got it, we were very impressed with the 5.1 sound when playing DVDs using the TOSLINK cable and the little blue light would come on. I was sure many times that the doorbell rang, or a ohone was ringing (it was the cool sound coming from the surround speakers), the subwoofer added a whole new dimension, and we just had a blast watching DVDs. Even music DVDs were amazing for a receiver that we only paid a couple hundred dolalrs for.
However, I just really lost the joy of listening to CDs. I though it was the room, my ears, the CDs, the speakers, or who knows what. I tried every programmed sound mode, whatever they call that, but nothing ever sounded as good as my old receiver. Just never thought this receiver was really at fault, since it was new, state of the art for that low price range.
After reading WRW's comments, I realize perhaps it is just the design, or maybe my personal preferences. I even asked at a pro sound shop thinking maybe it was our room layout or something, but they talked about better amplifying equipment, and mostly about speakers and their unique characteristics, not about how seriously detrimental a receiver could be to our sound quality.
I finally realize, it's the receiver, stupid!
I have read recently about the importance of listening to various receivers ebfore buying. I always thought they were about the same, and it was the speakers that made the difference. I guess I might have been wrong.
Going out tomorrow to replace this lightweight hunk of junk that really ruined the last couple years of listening to CDs. In fact, we just never did after we bought this thing.
I've always loved Sony products, but this particular item is a bit of a dog. We are looking at the DE995, but will be a lot more careful this time around.

Average Reviews:

These days, it's getting harder to find stereo only receivers. I needed one for my garage and parties.
I really did not want to buy a home theatre system with all the extra video ports that would never be used.
This receiver rocks! Lots of power, an MP3 jack in front, optional bluetooth adapter (which I'll never use).
The AM/FM reception is very good, I'm almost 30 miles from most transmitters.
The dial cranks up to 70 for power. It is crisp and clear up to about 64. Then a little bit of distortion
enters into the picture. That's pretty respectable. Even cranked up for hours it seems to run cool enough.
Great bang for the buck and highly recommended. Take advantage of the subwoofer out and add one to your system.
I paired it with two Sony SSF-5000 speakers, and the Sony SA-W3000 subwoofer. Turns out to be a good balanced system.
I can even listen to it a quarter mile away in my sweet corn field!

Sony STR-DE1075 A/V Receiver with Dolby Digital, DTS, and 6.1 Decoding Review

Sony STR-DE1075 A/V Receiver with Dolby Digital, DTS, and 6.1 Decoding
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The STR-DE1075 is an excellent receiver. It packs a considerable punch for the money. One glance at the connection panel at the rear will confirm that you can pretty much hook up anything with it.
Setting up is easy, particularly if you have it hooked up to a monitor or TV, because the on-screen display is very good. Setup can be done via the clearly laid-out front panel, or from the absolutely dreadful remote control. You can specify the size of each speaker, the distance from the listener and other parameters.
The system is designed around a 6.1 Dolby Digital processor. This means that it can handle the rear surround effects channel that has begun to be added to movies recently. A variety of DSP options are available for those people who have awkward speaker placement or for those who just like to fiddle around.
I have just two complaints about the unit. The user guide .... It helps you setup the system but little else. When I spend hundreds of dollars on something, I expect a clear and comprehensive user guide. Many of the receivers facilities are practically ignored and there is no mention whatsoever of the remote control - my other complaint. It is overcomplicated and unattractive.
I must disagree on one point with one of the other reviewers. It is much better, I feel, to use the remote control to go through the setup routine. This allows you to sit in the listening position while you setup the speakers.
As far as sound quality is concerned, I doubt you will find a finer system in this price range. It has more than enough power to cope with most home-based setups and in two-channel mode, it sounds as good as most sub $500 amplifiers.
Highly recommended.

TEAC AG-790A Stereo Receiver Review

TEAC AG-790A Stereo Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a 7.1 channel Home Theater Receiver (HTR), but I got rid of it in favor of this stereo receiver. For me, the HTR was excessively complicated with too many menus to work through just to play music from my collection of LP's, cassette's, or CD's. The Teac AG-790A is simple to use for playing music. This receiver can control four speakers. The description of this product does not mention that if you want to control two sets of speakers (4 in total), they should be identical. There is no way to adjust for differences between two sets of speakers with different sound qualities or power ratings. TEAC's manual makes the same recommendation for identical speakers if you are going to use four speakers. The controls are very easy to use, although as one reviewer mentioned, I too would have preferred more dials instead of buttons. I know, "old school". Still, the buttons are very easy to use. I have a phonograph, cassette recorder/player, and CD recorder/player all attached to this receiver with a couple of Bose speakers. The radio tuner is great too. The sound of music this receiver produces is fabulous. However, for those times when I want to emphasize the bass sounds, I might add a powered sub-woofer as my "second set of speakers". There are bass and treble controls on this receiver, which work great. I am really talking about the sound quality of my speakers and not the receiver. I am talking about really pumping up the bass beyond what my speakers can provide. A sub-woofer with its own internal power system connected as the second set of speakers will allow me to adjust for the differences between the different speakers independent of this receiver. With the bass, treble adjustments available on this receiver, there really is no need for a powered sub-woofer, unless you are a bass freak as I am sometimes. That is just a personal choice. This receiver provides a lot of adjustment with its bass, treble and loudness controls. The bottom line is I highly recommend this receiver for music lovers.

If all you need is a great stereo receiver - and NO 5.1 or DOLBY surround - then this is the unit for you. Simple to install and operate. Very clean sound and plenty of power. One or two more inputs wounld't hurt, but overall you can't beat the deal on this receiver. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a basic stereo receiver that has plenty of clean power. Great buy.
NOTE: This review is in my own words based on my own experiences with this product - unlike Chi Tran, whose ENTIRE REVIEW TEXT of this item was copied "cut and paste" from the Crutchfield website. What a joke.....

I've had this receiver for about 7 years and it has been amazing. It has great power, good quality sound, and more than enough connections for it's time. It uses the tech of it's time to do a great job of being a A/V hub for your entertainment. That said, it doesn't have new features like HDMI or the newer digital sound options. (TrueHD, etc) Realizing that this is a discontinued unit, I just wanted to review it to share how good it's been. Works like new after 7 years and mine was a refurb to begin with. Can't go wrong with Sony A/V.

I found the 845 reciver to be a very well thought out piece of equipment. It has 100watts X 5 channels, Dolby Digital and DTS processers, and a wealth of connections. All the RCA jacks one could ever need, 4 S-Video inputs, 4 Fiber optic, and a dual sub output for those who like their bass thick and chunky! And to top it off.... this year it includes Sony's Remote Commander, which will control just about everything you own. I would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for Digital surround sound, versitility, and reliabilaty.... that won't break the bank!

Down to the cut and chase. This is a great Reciever. I am constantly looking, reviewing and comparing electronic equipment and would say that I have a good knowledge of the market. I give this product a Five Star rating because of the features it carries at the price it gives. If you want a Reciever that can do multiple S-video, digital, analog inputs/outputs for each component,(such as a DSS satalite,VCR,DVD,CD,MD,LD,Ect.)this may not be the Reciever for you. Sure the Reciever can recieve all of these components, just not in S-video & Digital. For support of all these functions you need a bigger (and more expensive, I might add!) Reciever. But if your looking for a Reciever that can handle three Digital/S-video,+ multiple analog inputs/outputs this is the reciever for you! It has plenty of power which is clean and very clear. I love the fact you can adjust individual Bass/Mid/Treble levels and frequencies, the distance and height of the speakers and Type of speakers. These funtions gives the listening point that sweet spot. It also has full Dolby digital/DTS decoding along with 27 soundfeilds that compliment the sound even further. This Reciever has allot of the functions and abilities of the higher end Recievers without the big bucks. Plus, it's from a reliable and reputable company. Sure this Reciever doesn't have it all, but that ALL includes the price.

Sony's STR-DE835 A/V Receiver employs Dolby Digital and DTS decoding for incredible theater like surround sound in your home. Sony's Digital Cinema Sound system also provides the adjustments necessary to customize sound to your own listening environment. This home theater powerhouse provides 100 watts to each of its five channels which means you won't be asking for more power anytime soon. Discrete output transistors provide for low distortion for less background noise during those quiet movie moments. 5.1-Channel inputs, S-Video inputs/outputs, four digital inputs and a pre-programmed remote control complement the back panel.

Sony STR-DE897 Audio / Video Receiver, Black Review

I recently replaced my JVC surround receiver with this one. I love it, now I have all the inputs I need for VCR, DVD, Sattelite, Etc.. It also lets me connect composit video devices and send them to my monitor through the s-video jack. With my JVC receiver I could never get a good balance between my surround speakers and my center and front speakers. With the new receiver it sounds great. The only problem is now I'm tempted to add side surrounds to get 7.1 surround.

Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver Review

Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver
Average Reviews:

This receiver replaced a Sony STR 397 that had a continuous static problem that was never fixed. I gave up on the Sony and bought the Onkyo. I use it to power two Polk tower speakers hooked up to my HDTV and DVD player.
The receiver is basic, no frills. Bass, treble and balance controls are on the front panel. There is no loudness control. There are multiple memory settings for music stations. All the standard connections are in the back including an input for an iPod (docking station extra). The tuner works well and has standard scanning for stations.
The receiver is rated at 50W per channel. It is plenty adequate for the Polks. The sound is clear and unvarnished. It produces a crisper, cleaner sound than the Sony.
For sound reproduction without lots of frills and buttons, this has proved an excellent choice. I am very pleased with the item.
Once again, I have to complement Amazon for having excellent pricing and incredible free shipping that is fast.
